We split oak, larch and spruce by hand along the grain, so the wood's own fibres decide where it breaks. The surface sheds water the way a duck's feathers do — untreated, unpainted, good for a century.

Splitting along the grain opens the wood's closed capillaries. Each shingle lays flat on the next, and each gives water downward because there is nowhere to draw it in. The wooden churches of the Carpathians have stood under these roofs for 200 years — without a brush, without a chemical.
The shape of one shingle overlaps the shape of the next. Water runs across the surface, not through it.
10 mm thick at the visible edge. A split shingle doesn't crack under impact because the fibres were already broken along the grain.
The same shingle, the same method. The roof passes into the wall without a seam, without a change of material.
The wood greys evenly, the fibres close up but don't rot. After 50 years it looks better than the day it went up.
Four woods, one method.
Each wood has its reason. Oak is hard and rich in tannin. Larch lives by its resin. Spruce is light and economical. Hardened spruce is steamed to close the capillaries and extend service life.
